High definition DVDs, commonly known as HD DVD were introduced to the market in March 2006. They look very similar to regular DVDs, but offer more memory for storage and a better quality audio and video playback. Toshiba was the first to bring HD DVD and their players out on the market. Even if successful and benefits initially. However, the life of these discs on the market was short-lived, due to increasing Blu-ray. Toshiba finally suspended the manufacturing of high-definition players and drives.

High-definition DVDs use smaller laser wavelength to store data, allowing storage high optical density. Compression H.264/MPEG-4AVC red laser was used for data recording. The general specifications of these devices are:

– The storage capacity of pre-recorded playback material: – a single layer 15 GB, 30 GB dual-layer, triple layer 51GB
– Home Recording HD DVD-R (Recordable): – a single layer 20 GB dual layer 40 GB.
– Physical dimensions include discs of 8 cm and 12 cm, which are single or double face.
– Transfer rate 36 Mbps data rate is 1x and the time required for such transfer for a single layer is 56 minutes and the double layer is 110 minutes.
– The speed 2x the data transfer speed is 72 Mbps and the time required for transfer is 28 minutes for a single layer and 55 minutes for double layer.
– The data layer is always 0.6 mm below the surface for protection.

These new players have been with backward compatibility. Therefore, it can play CDs, DVDs and HD DVD. Almost all recent operating systems like Windows XP, Windows Vista, Apple Mac OS X 10.5 and even those based on the Linux can work with these players. A series of "soft" players (software) can play content from HD DVD players as well.

Microsoft released its album for the Xbox 360 in November 2006. This gave the Xbox 360 can play HD content. However, it was suspended in February 2008 due to the increasing popularity of Blu-ray.

Some companies like Samsung and LG even had players who can play both HD DVD and Blu-ray. However, these products do not click on the market. Computer manufacturers such as Acer and HP took PC with Blu-ray and HD DVD.

Blu-ray has managed to push back that, despite having both the same quality of reproduction audio and video. This is mainly due to the fact that Blu-ray offers better control, Internet integration and interactivity. Blu-ray also offers more storage space than HD DVD.
