Sony Kindle Comparison 2009

I’m a big fan of books. I used to read a lot when I was a kid, all kinds of books my parents and grandparents had back home. I even had a library license and was a pretty active visitor.

Unfortunately, that has changed in the last years. After I graduated college and started working a full time job, all of my spare time seemed to evaporate, so I had less and less time for reading. Maybe just sometimes, in weekends, I could spend some time with a good book.

Still, I spend lot of time traveling and commuting. Time I could use for some extra reading, but carrying big heavy books with me all-around is not really my dream. Also, books tend to get pricier and pricier these days. But, I recently discovered there’s a solution, and is called the eBook reader.

I’ve studied the offers the last days and found out that there aren’t many competitors on this still young market: besides Amazon, with their two Kindle readers, there’re Sony and some other, like iBook, Ire, etc. But Asus, Apple and some other producers announced they are planning to develop such machines, so this segment might grow in the near future. The problem with these devices is their price; they are really expensive, and I believe competition will have a significant effect on this aspect and prices will drop.

Anyway, as I was saying, from what I searched, Amazon’s Kindles seemed to be the best choice right now. There are two versions, the bigger Kindle DX with a 10 inch screen, for around 500 bucks, and the smaller Kindle 2 reader with a 6 inch screen and just around $280.

All these devices have keyboards, use e-paper technology so they aren’t very friendly for your eyes and offer very good battery life (around 2 weeks). They all come with access to a huge book store offered by Amazon, with not only books but magazines, papers, etc also. And these aren’t that expensive: a good novel will cost from 5 to 10 bucks, and that’s a very good price considering the paper version might go up to $50 . Yes, reading on this Kindle probably isn’t the same to reading a “classic” book, but hey, these readers do come with their advantages.

So, I for one think I should choose the smaller Kindle 2 because it’s cheaper and comes with 3G that should be able to work in my country. This way I could easily download books from the device itself. You should also read this article for more details on this Kindle 2 Reader.
